Why Equity and Inclusion are Key to Our Mission

2nd December 2024

Many struggles people face aren’t a result of personal choices alone but systemic issues tied to race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disabilities, and socioeconomic status. Can we envision a world without these barriers? Equity seeks to create that reality by leveling the playing field — empowering marginalized groups with the resources they need to achieve similar outcomes as more advantaged groups.

At SaltWater Community Association equity is central to our mission, here is why it matters and how we are working towards changing historic attitudes and values for a more inclusive future for our communities.

What Is Equity?

Equity recognizes that we are not the same and do not all start from the same place. It acknowledges the unique challenges individuals face based on race, gender, disabilities, or other factors, and makes necessary adjustments to promote fairness and social justice.

Equity vs. Equality

While equality assumes everyone is equal and so benefits from the same treatment and resources, equity understands that different people have different needs. Equity provides tailored support to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve the same outcomes.

The image above cleverly illustrates the difference between equity and equality.

• Equality is giving everyone the same-sized box to stand on, regardless of their height, leaving some unable to see over the fence.
• Equity adjusts the box sizes based on height, ensuring everyone can see over the fence and enjoy the view.

Why Equity and Inclusion Are Key to Our Mission

Guided by our motto, “Communities helping communities live better,” we believe in collective action to drive real change. A community thrives when no one is left behind—regardless of their race, gender, abilities, or circumstances.

By fostering an inclusive environment where everyone has an equal chance to succeed, society reaps the benefits of diverse perspectives, talents, and contributions.

There is no way to address equity without tackling the deficit in resources. That’s why Saltwater Community Association is leading initiatives like:

• #I’MMe Project: Promoting social equity and celebrating diversity to foster inclusivity and acceptance within our communities.

Breaking Barriers Entrepreneurial Program: Empowering individuals with exceptionalities with the skills, training, tools, and knowledge they need to start and succeed in their businesses.

Independent Living for People with Exceptionalities: Supporting individuals with disabilities to live independently and thrive.

East Coast Hydroponic Farm: Providing sustainable solutions to address food insecurity and create opportunities in our communities.

These projects are just a glimpse of how we are working to bridge gaps and create lasting change.

At Saltwater Community Association, equity is not a concept, but a commitment to building a freer, fairer, and just world. We acknowledge and address systemic inequities in our communities by empowering everyone to thrive, ensuring no one is left behind. Together, we can create a future where fairness and opportunity are the standard for all
