Newfoundland and Labrador face the highest rate of food insecurity in Canada, with 22.9% of households reporting food insecurity in 2022, according to the PROOF Food Insecurity Report. Saltwater Community Association Inc. is dedicated to breaking the cycle of food insecurity through hydroponic farming and creating opportunities for those who need them most.
The East Coast Roots Hydroponic Farm Project, funded by the Northpine Foundation, along with wind and solar funding from Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency (ACOA) and Industry, Energy & Technology (ICT), is a bold initiative to combat food insecurity in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. By producing 15,500 fresh produce units annually using hydroponic farming methods, this project will provide consistent, high-quality food for local communities.
Beyond addressing immediate food needs, the project promotes environmental sustainability and economic development. It will create jobs for individuals and empower the community.
Hydroponic farming is a soil-free method of growing plants using water-based nutrient solutions in an indoor environment. Plants receive energy from LED lighting tailored to their specific needs, while seeds are planted in soil-free materials like coconut husk, creating a clean and controlled environment free from bugs and weeds.
Hydroponics offers a sustainable solution for year-round food production, even during harsh winters. It uses fewer resources, produces higher yields, and minimizes environmental impact.
In a world facing challenges like climate change, resource depletion, and chemical-intensive farming, hydroponic farming is a smarter, healthier way forward—for our food, our bodies, and our planet.
